Welcome to the Soccer Cape Breton Coaching Curriculum

Byte Size Coaching can give coaches on the island of Cape Breton the tools they need to succeed.

I am very pleased to have teamed up with former Canadian National Team Coach, Tony Waiters, in preparation and delivery of this program to you the coaches of Soccer Cape Breton.

This program is initially designed to assist the volunteer parent-coach, some of whom may be new to coaching and some may never have played the game of soccer. With constant updates and program developments, other content is available for the more experienced coach.

I believe that the Byte Size program will make soccer coaching fun and more rewarding for the coach as well as the player. The program is easy to follow with progressive practice plans week by week.

The foundation of the program is based on the FUNdamentals. When using the practice plans, be sure to adapt to the needs of the players. Have fun; be flexible, be creative, use your own ideas and try to ensure that the progress of your players is fluent. Try to disguise the repetitive exercises so that players stay receptive and tuned it.

Feel free to explore the curriculum for older players to build your base of ideas. You will be surprised to know that most professional teams still use basic exercises from the U7 curriculum to work on technique and keep the training environment in a state of flux and provide variety for the players.

Be aware of any drills/exercises that keep players in lines or waiting for their turn. If you have an assistant coach, get a couple of practice areas going at once. Make sure that you use every minute of your practice time to the maximum.

Hopefully this program will provide the right environment for players to learn basic techniques and skills with the ball. In the FUNdamental stage, Agility, Balance, Co-ordination and Speed – Running, Jumping and Throwing as well as Catching, Passing and Kicking are technical aspects to focus on and improve. Don’t forget that support from parents, safe environments and formation of friends are all aspects that will aid in team cohesion and a successful season.

Lastly I would like to say that I hope that this program will facilitate all aspects of development, not only for the players, but for you as the coach. Feel free to provide feedback as this program will develop into one that is “for the coaches, produced by the coaches” and together we can all grow.

Thank you,

Have a great season.
